If you do decide to stay in Spain permanently
If you do decide to stay in Spain permanently, you are well aware that you can exchange your EU/EEA licence for the Spanish equivalent.
Although you are legally allowed to drive with a non-Spanish driving licence, this is still a grey area even for the Spanish police. It is therefore worth exchanging it within 6 months of moving to Spain to avoid confusion.

To apply for an exchange licence you will need to fill in an application form at the provincial traffic directorate. You will also need to make sure that you have the following required documents with you:
- Proof of identity (original passport, residence card and a copy)
- Proof of residence (Empadronamiento or NIE)
- Valid current driving licence (original and copy)
- 2 photographs 25mm x 32mm.
- Statement from the D.V.L.A. that the applicant has not been banned or suspended.
- Fee €24.10
You can contact the D.V.L.A.
On 0300 790 6801 (UK call) or +44 (0)1792 786 369 (overseas call) or visit http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/.
It is also worth noting that your Spanish licence will need to be renewed like your UK licence every 10 years until you are 45 and then every 5 years until you are 70. For drivers over the age of 70, your licence will need to be renewed every 2 years.
Using an existing non-EU driver's licence
If you have a valid driving licence from any other country outside the EU/EEA, you have the legal right to drive in Spain for 6 months from the time you first become a resident.
After the first 6 months, you will need to exchange your driving licence for a Spanish one if you intend to stay in the country for a longer period.
